State Civil War sesqui task force holds first meeting

The state’s new Civil War Sesquicentennial Task Force held its first meeting Wednesday in Shreveport, setting initial business and expanding its scope to fit the state’s history.

Coming to Shreveport from points as distant as New Orleans and Baton Rouge the volunteer advisory board met with Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne at the plush WK Manor on Fairfield Avenue.

Cheri Gainor had an exciting first day of work at the David Wills House in Gettysburg.

Film director Steven Spielberg visited the Civil War house Wednesday afternoon and was believed to be conducting research for his upcoming film about President Abraham Lincoln.

Pair plans to save Civil War ground

Local businessman and preservationist Johnny Mitchell has a vision of the State Route 3 corridor in Spotsylvania County-more Central Park from Fredericksburg to the Orange County line. It pains him to think about it.

“In 20 years, it’s going to look like anywhere, USA,” he said.

He was parked at the edge of a cornfield near the intersection of Route 3 and State Route 20, looking out over Wilderness Run and the land where Walmart had planned to build a controversial supercenter. There’s already a Sheetz and a McDonald’s below, on the other side of the four-lane Route 3.

Compromise would share John Brown bell with Marlborough

A West Virginia man trying to bring an historic bell back to where it once hung in Harpers Ferry has taken a new tack: establishing a sister-city program between Marlborough and Harpers Ferry.

“That’s the compromise that I’ve offered to really anybody that would listen,” said Howard Swint, a commercial real estate broker from Charleston, W.Va.

Fundraiser to help finish memorial, CSS Neuse II ground beautification

The CSS Neuse II foundation is hosting the third annual Wings over the Neuse event today to help honor one of its founders.

The fundraiser will run from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., and plates with five wings, celery, carrots and dressing will be $5.

Event Chair John Nix said Wings over the Neuse started in 2009 to raise money to honor a man who was instrumental in erecting the CSS Neuse II.

Film explores the role of Jews in Civil War

As America marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, a new film highlights the role Jews played in the conflict that pitted North against South. The 86-minute film, “Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray,” was produced by the National Center for Jewish Film of Brandeis University. It was screened locally on July 13, at Cong. Beth Tikvah/New Milford Jewish Center.
