His early life
Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa. His childhood was difficult and marked by parental divorce, school bullying and his difficulty picking up social cues due to Asperger’s syndrome. He spent much of his time reading comics, science fiction and nonfiction books while reading comics himself! At age 12, he taught himself computer coding and developed Blastar software – selling well enough that it earned him $500 that he used to purchase more software products.
After graduating high school, he relocated with his mother, sister, and brother to Canada before attending University of Pennsylvania for economics and physics studies.
After graduating, he took advantage of the dot-com boom by founding Zip2 with his brother Kimbal – an online travel guide company which was so successful that Compaq purchased it for $341 million!
His education
Elon Musk’s educational journey was anything but ordinary. From an early age he displayed an unquenchable curiosity for subjects such as engineering, physics and technology – often asking himself “where does the world begin and end?” His fascination led him to develop his own BASIC programming course for the Commodore VIC-20 at just 10 years old!
At Penn, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in physics and economics. Additionally, he briefly studied for a Ph.D in energy physics at Stanford but dropped out after only two days due to an unexpected trip home from California.
These degrees have given him the knowledge he needs to pursue his goal of improving civilization and attaining sustainability. With his long-term focus, he is willing to make bold investments at risk to pursue his ambitions.

Musk has had several high-profile relationships in his lifetime. He and Canadian author Justine Wilson married in 2000, had six children together and later divorced; Wilson published an expose about their rocky marriage in Marie Claire magazine in 2008.
Walter Isaacson recently unveiled that Elon Musk now has nine or ten children, including two sets of twins, as part of his biography of him.
