There is nothing like visiting the United States for a true golfing experience, with so many opportunities to play golf both here in the East Coast of the USA and on the popular West Coast. Here are just a few of the countless golf destinations that are the ideal place to escape to for a breath of fresh air and a couple of hours of ‘me time’ on the golf course:
Taking a USA golf holidays to play some of the best golf courses in America. My favourite place to stay is W San Diego, where you have the option of staying in a two-bedroom condominium or a deluxe condominium with ocean views.
PLAY THE WEST COAST
The west coast of the USA, from Florida in the south to California in the north is home to some of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. There are at least 14 professional courses in the top 100 in the US, including the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course. Am I right in thinking that these two have made the top 100 of Golf Monthly’s list of the top 100 courses in the world? I must be – I’ve played both and they are amazing golf courses. Besides, you can’t beat the weather either in southern California where on a sunny day you can throw a poolside umbrella over you in the early morning and go off to hit some of the most scenic and challenging golf courses in the world.
Am I right in thinking that golf is expensive in the US? No. Well, maybe it’s pricey, but it’s definitely not exorbitant, unlike some of the courses in Europe, where it can cost up to £120 for a round. In comparison, American courses are extremely affordable, with, for example, the Round Hill Ranch located on an exquisite stretch of private golfing land in Big Bear Lake, California. One of the most affordable and spectacular golfing properties in the USA, this is also where Michael Phelps was spotted playing a round with his kids just a few months ago. Costing just $150 for the entire day for up to four people, including a four-course, 18-hole golf course and driving range, this is a holiday you can enjoy without breaking the bank.
PLAY THE EAST COAST
If you’re in the mood for a new adventure, head north from southern California to the island state of Hawaii. The easiest way to get there is via Hawaii’s only international airport, Honolulu International Airport, which is a great option for people like me who love to fly. A flight to the neighbouring island of Maui will cost you just £145.00 return, with most other island destinations costing a similar amount. If you want a bit more than one trip, it’s worth splashing out on an Aloha Heaven 2-Day promotion package, costing £100, which includes the Hilo Bay Golf Resort’s golf trolley transfer, a deluxe buffet breakfast, and a pair of round trip guided transportation tickets. My favourite way to play golf in Hawaii is to opt for an Island Golf Vacation at Hanauma Bay, one of the most gorgeous beaches on the Hawaiian Islands and arguably the most magical. This renowned bay is so sacred and precious that it is banned to swimming.

It’s a special place where you can do nothing but stand and stare out to the ocean as your golf coach has a private lesson. There are several accommodation options around this golfing hot spot, but my favourite place is to stay at the Mamalu Makani Kohala, which is right on the waterfront and very close to the beach. The hotel is a spectacular white and royal-blue building surrounded by beautiful, tropical gardens. My favourite room is The West Wing, which comes with a spacious balcony, lovely communal living space, and has the feel of a traditional Japanese teahouse. This is the ideal accommodation for a memorable getaway to Hawaii.
PLAY GOLF IN MEXICO
If you want to see some seriously good golf then consider heading south to Mexico. Your best bet is to go to either Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta, both fantastic locations for world-class golf. There are so many golf courses to choose from that I’ll highlight just a few of my favourites in these locations. The first one is the Iberostar Grand Velas Los Cabos, a five-star hotel and a golfing playground in the sky. Its seventeen oceanfront holes of the resort’s 18-hole golf course are so beautiful that they are considered to be the “most beautiful golf holes in the world.” My favourite part is at the far end of the course, where you can enjoy a dramatic canyon view from the 5th hole. Lounge Bar and Grill, which is located on one of the golf course’s driving ranges. There’s so much going on at Cabo Wabo’s that it’s a shame you can only visit the golf club on the weekends.
