You Should Plan Time for Activities That Tend to Distract You

Like me, you probably check your email and/or Twitter several times a day (and end up staying there for far too long). Build blocks of time to interact with potential distractions instead of letting yourself mindlessly scroll. I give myself an hour for lunch and several 10- to 15-minute breaks throughout the day to relax, reflect, and exercise. And even if you do your best, you won’t be as effective as you’d like.

For example, taking a break every once in a while can help you think more creatively and strategically. To generate new ideas, it can be helpful to temporarily remove one’s mind from its usual environment.

Breaks planned at regular intervals give you a goal to work toward and a sense of accomplishment along the way. Knowing that you can take a break at the end of a set period of work will give you the boost in motivation and concentration you need to get through it.

Don’t Try to Juggle Too Many Things at Once.

Here’s the thing: trying to do too much at once is futile. Multiple studies have demonstrated the negative effects of task switching. Besides taking more time, you also end up making more mistakes.

If that’s the case, how will it affect your daily routine? You should only focus on one thing at a time and not try to multitask.

Humans have difficulty switching between tasks because our brains don’t have the capacity to learn a new task very quickly. The term “switching cost” describes the time and effort we waste because of our mistakes when switching to a new skill.

You can avoid this by performing similar tasks in quick succession. Group your meetings into a single block of time, or set aside an hour or two each day to answer emails. The time you save by working in batches can be used for other purposes.
