Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has revealed pricing for its Mitsubishi Xpander seven-seater, which is priced at RM91,369 without insurance, and comes with the exemption of sales tax for 2020. This long-anticipated Xpander was seen in the past two weeks when the order books were released. It’s not the official launch but test drives in showrooms will begin on the 20th of November.

Locally manufactured in local assembly at the Hicom Automotive Manufacturers factory in Pekan in Malaysia, in which MMM invested in the construction of a new body shop as well as painting jigs, and an Xpander tester line. Malaysia has become the 3rd nation that produces the Xpander following Indonesia as well as Vietnam. Go here to read more about the process behind the CKD task, which includes QC and QC from MMC Japan.

The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross will be available in one variant that is not common nowadays. This implies it is likely that Xpander is as well-equipped as it could be as well, with MMM including a special Malaysia-only equipment not seen on other ASEAN markets. In terms of ASEAN the Xpander has proven to be a popular product for MMC with sales of approximately 270,000 units in the time since it’s introduction in Indonesia in August of 2017.

The imposing Dynamic Shield face is a 1.5 Liter naturally-aspirated engine that has 140 Nm and 105 PS of torque at 4,500 revs. Its 4A91 MIVEC unit delivers power to front wheels using an automatic four-speed gearbox.

For equipment, the new Xpander features bi-LED reflector headlamps as well as daylight running light bulbs that are LED. The LED eyes signify this as a facelift (the original model used halogen lamps) as well as U-shaped louvres, which substitute the triple-slats that are on the grille. Additionally, there are LED tail lights as well as two-tone alloys measuring 16 inches.

Inside, there is a black interior with leather seats that are quilted, the Xpander has a 9.0-inch screen head unit that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and a 360-degree camera and the dashcam are features that are unique to Malaysia. Additionally the Xpander is also equipped with keyless entry and push-start as well as an 4.2-inch multi-information display in color as well as six speakers and four rear air vents mounted on the roof.

In terms of safety, there are two airbags, ABS/EBD stability control with hill start assist, and Isofix anchors for child seats. One thing MMM could not do was include more airbags since this budget-friendly car was designed primarily to cater for an Indonesian market and there was not a huge need for more airbags than. We were told this by MMM’s senior vice president Hoffen Teh. You can read the interview with the CEO, Tomoyuki Shinishi on this page.

The Xpander will cost the RM91,369 OTR, with SST exemption This means it’s cheaper than Honda BR-V (RM93,420 for the highest V exempt from sales tax) along with Toyota Rush (RM91,885 for the highest S which includes sales tax exemption) and is also a CKD Japanese brand seven-seaters with style reminiscent of the SUV. Mitsubishi’s 5-year warranty on unlimited mileage is in effect.

Since the beginning of order taking about two weeks ago MMM have received more than 22,000 orders. “We would like to express our gratitude to all of our customers for showing their overwhelming enthusiasm for the newly launched Mitsubishi Xpander. We will make every effort in production to please the early customers as we can,” Shinnishi said.
