Afton: Historic Mount Hope Cemetery in struggle to survive

On a hilltop overlooking the St. Croix River lies a who’s who of Afton’s founding families.

The Berrys, the Cushings and the Getchells are buried in Mount Hope, a 5-acre cemetery near the end of a long, steep road. Almost all of the gravestones are
crumbling; sections of wrought-iron fence are falling; and inscriptions are
fading. Buckthorn is everywhere.

Minnesota’s Antietam re-enactors get flags and Capitol sendoff

A group of Minnesota Civil War buffs are headed to Maryland next week for a full-scale re-enactment of the Battle of Antietam.

It’s the 150th anniversary of the battle on Sept. 17, and the four re-enactors from Minnesota will get a stately send-off Wednesday at the Capitol.

More than 100 Civil War soldiers are buried in Redwood Falls cemetery.

Roger Breckenridge stood and looked at the names listed on the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) monument in the center of the Redwood Falls cemetery. “Most, but not all of these people are buried here,” said Breckenridge, who has spent hour upon hour getting to know the local cemetery in an effort to find and map out the locations of every single Civil War veteran who is buried there.

Civil War Commemoration Task Force to lay flags at graves over Memorial Day

Gov. Mark Dayton on Thursday, May 24 joined Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, Representative Dean Urdahl and other Members of the Governor’s Civil War Commemoration Task Force to recognize their efforts to honor the service of Minnesota Civil War soldiers.

The Task Force was established last year by Governor Dayton to help Minnesotans remember the service of over 18,000 Minnesotans who served in the Civil War.

Memorial Day tribute to Civil War soldiers

Minnesota’s year-long effort to mark the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War will include a special tribute to fallen soldiers on Memorial Day.

Members of the Governor’s Civil War Commemoration Task Force announced plans today to place special flags on gravesites throughout the state.

Civil War reenactors come home from Shiloh bug bitten, but happy

It was billed as a Civil War reenactment of the Battle of Shiloh, but John Fritsche said the Tennessee event could have been dubbed the “Battle of the Ticks.”

Minnesota’s Civil War soldiers remembered for Battle of Shiloh

The Governor’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee will host its inaugural Civil War Soldier’s Remembrance Event at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul.

The event will commemorate and remember the participation of Minnesota soldiers on the sesquicentennial anniversary date of the Battle of Shiloh in 1862.

Civil War commemoration task force opens contest

Minnesota’s Civil War history might be seen as first and last.

The state furnished the first volunteer in answer to President Lincoln’s call for troops  — Anokans believe that first volunteer was Aaron Greenwald — while the last surviving Union Army veteran was Albert Woolson of Duluth, who died in 1956.

The Civil War Commemoration Task Force, a body created by Gov. Mark Dayton to mark the 150th anniversary of that epic struggle, is currently inviting Minnesotans to join a logo design contest.
