The First Michigan Sharpshooters are best known for Company K, which was a company made up almost exclusively of Michigan Indians and many of them from our region of Northern Michigan. However, there were other aspects of the sharpshooters which were just as important to the valor achieved by this regiment.
Company I of the First Michigan Sharpshooters contained some of the white men from Northern Michigan who enlisted into the regiment. Wallace Woolsey from Northport, the son of Chauncey Woolsey who was featured in an earlier article, was one of these individuals.
