On a hilltop overlooking the St. Croix River lies a who’s who of Afton’s founding families.
The Berrys, the Cushings and the Getchells are buried in Mount Hope, a 5-acre cemetery near the end of a long, steep road. Almost all of the gravestones are
crumbling; sections of wrought-iron fence are falling; and inscriptions are
fading. Buckthorn is everywhere.
