Tilled-up grave marker a link to Civil War era

Gloria Bailey wanted to plant a garden behind her manufactured home on D.J. Johnson Road in Edwards. So she hired someone to plow the land.

They unearthed more than dirt.

“We started to find these big chunks of concrete,” she said. “I was picking them up and throwing them to the side. Then I found a giant piece.”

  1. Greetings
As a descendant of the Isaac Roberts, I have visited the James Roberts Cemetery at Billy Fields Rd. and Champion Hill a few times. I have also searched for the Issac Roberts, B. 1 Mar 1764 and D. 16 Mar 1816, and his wife Mary Johnson, B. 1752 and D. 16 Jan 1832, graves. Would it be possible to learn of any dates on the headstones found in Gloria’s future garden. Thanks, Mike

    • BURIED in the Robert’s Cemetery west of the Crossroads – a short distance from the Cook House on the Jackson Road. The road is only the Billie Field Road (new name for road) until it reaches the crossroads the the road becomes a continuation of the Jackson Road that stretched across the brow of Champion Hill.

The I. Roberts’ name on the Civil War map was the home of Isaac and Sarah Roberts. I don’t know any details about that yet but have information coming to me from Margie & Edwin Cole Bearss – Margie was a Cook so she kept a genealogy of the Cooks and the Roberts.

      First Grave: 1844
Remarks: In 1979, this very old cemetery was totally abandoned, and was almost impossible to find. It has many unmarked graves and has a thick overgrowth of poison ivy and rattan. It is known locally to some as the Cook Cemetery, but there are no Cook gravestones in it. The Sons of Confederate Veterans have cleaned up the cemetery and area leading to it in 2005.

    • I have some information on the old homeplace of I. Roberts (Issac & Sarah Roberts). There were two families (homes). One west of the Crossroads on the Jackson Road and the other south of the Crossroads on the Ratlifff plantation road, 1/3 mile from the Crossroads. Contact me if you are interested.
