Lincoln Movie, Ghost Tours and Designing Civil War Video Games Discussed at Gettysburg College

Some of the world’s top Civil War experts converged on Gettysburg College this  weekend for the conference, “The Future of Civil War History: Looking Beyond  the  150th.”  They talked about everything from the Oscar-nominated film, “Lincoln” to creating video game content and even ghost tours, along with issues  of making Civil War exhibits, tours and educational materials more inclusive.  One of the main goals here: weaving more stories of women and African-Americans  into the fabric of America’s Civil War remembrance.

Living on hallowed ground in Gettysburg

Every time Elizabeth Hoffman walks up the steps of her Cumberland Township home, she can’t help but remember the story.

A solider whose eyes had been blown out in an explosion during the Battle of
Gettysburg had been resting in the bedroom, she said, gesturing upstairs. But
after hearing the loud noises from nearby Pickett’s Charge he became frightened
and panicked, Elizabeth continued, her eyes wide as she told the familiar story.

Area businesses contend for Civil War dollars

Each day, the Holiday Inn Express in Hanover fields calls from visitors
hoping to reserve a room during the weekend of the 150th anniversary of the
Battle of Gettysburg.

The answer is always the same.

The hotel is booked.

In fact, the hotel started taking reservations as early as January 2012, said
Laura McDaniel, general manager of Holiday Inn Express.

Final step to historic Seminary Ridge pathway project

With construction equipment beeping in the background, officials held a
groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday to mark the beginning of the final phase of improvements to historic Seminary Ridge.

The crews and their earth-moving machinery were allowed to keep working
during the ceremony because, after all, there is a schedule to maintain.

The third and final phase of the project at the Lutheran Theological Seminary
in Gettysburg will complete the 1.03-mile Historic Pathway around the seminary,
replant native trees on the western slope of the seminary known as the Grove,
expand parking accommodations and restore the area to appear more similar to
what existed in 1863.

The death of the Gettysburg Cyclorama building

It was a long and painful death. Day after day, visitors came to gawk, to
mourn, to wait for the end. Nobody wanted to miss it, this last breath of a
dying beast.

But day after day it lived on, stubborn to resist the inevitable until the
very end. Who cared if the prognosis was bad? It had lived through worse. The
old Gettysburg landmark had fought hard for 13 years. It had resisted so many
naysayers and defied so many odds that it seemed almost miraculous that a
bulldozer would soon be bringing it down. Even its opponents couldn’t help but
come out for one last glimpse – like it or hate it, they said, there was no
denying its star power.

Premiere #1 takes the lead on local transportation to Gettysburg for 150th

A Dauphin County transportation company is betting on history with a summer shuttle run to Gettysburg that could serve as a template for the big recurring events that drive county tourism.

Londonderry Township-based Premiere #1 Limousine Service LLC is now taking orders for public tickets from the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg — a $33.50 package that includes a museum ticket — for the 10-day commemoration peak of the Battle of Gettysburg’s 150th anniversary.

Purdue, Lincoln Leadership Institute to Offer Leadership Class with Gettysburg Component

Purdue University will partner with The Lincoln Leadership Institute at Gettysburg, Pa.,to offer a course in organizational leadership that includes three days at the Civil War battle site.

Through “Experiencing Leadership: A Transformational Journey from Gettysburg,” students will delve into President Abraham Lincoln’s leadership style. They also will be put into situations similar to those of Civil War leaders like Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

Spend “An Evening with the Painting” during special after-hours exclusive program.

Join the Gettysburg Foundation’s Sue Boardman, Licensed Battlefield Guide and author/historian, on the platform for an exclusive “after-hours” program Saturday, March 23rd, of the Gettysburg Cyclorama painting at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. Visitors will explore the history of the genre of cycloramas and in particular the history of the Battle of Gettysburg Cyclorama. Presentation will include a discussion of the massive multi-year conservation effort of our country’s largest painting. The painting concludes with extended time on the platform to view the painting in full light and a journey under the diorama to see how the illusion comes to life. There will be time for a question and answer session.

This special program lasts about two hours and is limited to 50 attendees. Single adult ticket price is $20 and youth ticket (ages 6 to 12) is $10. This program begins at 5:00 p.m. in the Ford Motor Company Fund Education Center.

Other upcoming dates for this program are: April 13 at 6:00 p.m.; May 26 at 6:00 p.m.; June 1 at 6:00 p.m.; June 28 at 6:00 p.m.; July 21 at 6:00 p.m.; August 17 at 6:00 p.m.; September 21 at 6:00 p.m.; October 12 at 6:00 p.m.; November 22 at 4:30 p.m. with repeat show at 6:30 p.m.; and December 7 at 5:00 p.m.
