Port Hudson holds Civil War re-enactment over the weekend

“Cannoneers, to your posts,” a Confederate officer cried above the chaos of rifle fire. Southern soldiers grouped into formations under orders from officers as they began to march toward the fray downfield.

The crowd continued to grow as the 25th annual Civil War re-enactment at Port Hudson near Jackson, La., kicked into action with the first cannon blast.

Camp Ford reenactors revisit Civil War Saturday

Part of the darkest chapter in American history was remembered and reenacted in Tyler on Saturday at Camp Ford.
During the Civil War, in which nearly 700,000 American lives were lost, Camp Ford served first as a training camp established in 1862, then later as a prisoner-of-war camp in mid-1863, according to the historical marker that sits atop Camp Ford Historic Park.

All weekend long visitors were treated to beautiful scenery and living history thanks to the Gambles Hotel Civil War re-enactment; It is an annual event and a rich part of Florence county history. The event is hosted by the 23rd SC Infantry, which is a group of enthusiasts that portray Confederate soldiers of the Civil War.

Civil War Reenactment

Historic reenactments of a Civil War skirmish, the Battle of Picacho Pass, and the New Mexico battles of Glorieta and Val Verde, take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 16 and 17; $10 per vehicle up to four people, $3 each additional person. No admission after 3 p.m. Reenactors camp at the site and present a living history of camp life of the period, including family life, medical care, food and other provisions. Contemporary food and beverages are available for purchase. Visitors are asked to bring plenty of water, hats, chairs and sunscreen. Pets are not permitted.

Blakeley State Park cancels biyearly Civil War re-enactment

Blakeley State Park will be unable to hold the Civil War reenactment and living history activities this spring because of lack of state appropriations to operate the state historic park, according to Director Jo Ann Flirt.

Traditionally scheduled for every other year on a weekend near the April 9, 1865, battle that was the last of the American Civil War, the 2013 event had been tentative ever since the park entered the 2012-13 fiscal year without state funding, Flirt said.

Civil War set to break out again in Vista

Vista — War is hell. But not in Vista next weekend, when 300 to 500 of re-enactors will eagerly gather for the 13th annual Civil War Re-Enactment on the grounds of the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum.

Billed by organizers as the largest “outdoor play” in the region, the two-day event — from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 9 and 10 — draws history buffs from all over the state for two days of battles, living history camps and more.

Battle of Collierville revives history

The Battle of Collierville holds the distinction of being the biggest Shelby County land battle of the Civil War, but its real distinction is the narrow escape of Union Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and the effect of his escape on the rest of the war.

A re-enactment of the battle was witnessed by 1,515 people Saturday at Schilling Farms in Collierville, where history, cannon fire and rifle volleys were reminders of the nation’s bloodiest war.

Ready…aim…re-enact! Civil War coming to GG

No, the area south of Trask Avenue hasn’t seceded from the municipal union, but if it did it would have to contend with the hawkeyed soldiers of Company C of the First Regiment of United States Sharpshooters.

A re-enactment group from this Southern California group of history buffs will come to Stanley Ranch Museum in Garden Grove Sept. 29-30 to give residents a taste of what life was like for troopers during the War Between the States.
